We are going to do our Bible study just a little differently today to allow you to see a couple of other tools we will use during the studies. Our official study in 1 Corinthians will begin on Tuesday, September 5th. This coming week I will share a couple of articles giving you some background on the book so that we are all on the same page in understanding the background.

The Pointe of this lesson is to help the student:

  • To connect with one another by seeing what verses of Scripture are important to each other and why.
  • To be reminded of God’s goodness to us through His Word.
  • To practice a few more tools of our Bible studies.

Step Two: Connect It

Step Two: Connect It

While the authorship of Lamentations remains in doubt because no author is mentioned in its opening verses, strong evidence within the text and within the books of history point to the prophet Jeremiah as the author. The Septuagint (LXX) which is the Greek translation of the Old Testament - adds a notation asserting Jeremiah's authorship.

The book's original name in Hebrew can be translated as "Alas." It is this lamenting that helps tie Jeremiah to the book. Jeremiah witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem from the first steps of the Babylonian invasion to the sighs heard from a city in rubble.

The Babylonian invasion took place in 586 BC. It would make sense to place the writing of this book a year or two later.

Step Three: Wrestle It

Thomas Chisholm wrote the poem about God's faithfulness in 1923. Chisholm sent the song to William Runyan who was affiliated with the Moody Bible Institute and Hope Publishing Company. Runyan set the poem to music and saw that it was published in the same year.

Great is Thy Faithfulness has become one of the church's favorite hymns.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not,

Thy compassions, they fail not;
as Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed Thy hand hath provided:
great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Can you think of other songs which tell us of the faithfulness of God?

Step Three: Wrestle It

Step Four: Build It

Step Four: Build It

Like the book of Job, the book of Lamentations shows us a man of God who is puzzled by the results of sin and evil and suffering in the world. Jeremiah understood that this tragedy was the fault of a sinful and wayward people. Jeremiah realized that this destruction was the results of the judgment of a holy God. But his sadness and weariness is real none-the-less. At the heart of this book - and our life - is this passage of Scripture. This statement of trust in the faithfulness of God shines brightly as a beacon blasting away the darkness.

Other Scriptures in the Bible that speak to the faithfulness of God are

  • 1 John 1:9 ESV
  • 2 Timothy 2:13 ESV
  • 1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:24 ESV
  • Hebrews 10:23 ESV
  • Isaiah 25:1 ESV

Step Five

It is time for you to share your favorite Bible verse. Add a new verse in the box marked "TOPIC TITLE." Quote the verse in the large white rectangle box. Also mention why this verse is important to you. If someone else has already picked your verse you can add your comments under the verse. You can also comment on a verse that someone else has mentioned. You can also add your favorite verse to the comment section at the bottom.

One Thought to “Bible Study | Lamentations 3:22-23”

  1. Amanda DeVore

    I’m not sure my verse got saved in the topic title section as I got an error message so I’ll add it here again just I’m case! I have several Bible verses that I would consider my favorites depending on the situation but one of them is PROVERBS 3:5-6. So much so that my daughter’s middle name is Trust. I hope it serves as a great reminder to her as it does for me.
