As Paul considers embarking on a second excursion through the area of the Mediterranean Sea, Luke records, “Let us return and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the Word of the Lord, and see how they are” (Acts 15:36 ESV). These few words give insight into Paul’s desire for the journey:
- Let us visit – There is a passion inside Paul to return for fellowship with these people. Even in the midst of persecution and pain, Paul had fond memories of his time and the people there.
- the brothers – Paul felt a responsibility and inclination toward the people whom he had led to Christ. Were they still faithful? Had persecution taken its toll on their faith … on their lives? They are brothers in Christ, and needing support and encouragement.
- we proclaimed the Word of the Lord – The basis for their relationship was the teaching of the Word. Paul needed to reinforce and further his instruction.
- see how they are – Paul was concerned for their over-all well being. Was the group of believers growing? Were they respected within their community? Was culture placing unjust demands upon their faith and their lives?
Are there lessons from Paul’s second journey today?
There are many parallels between the culture in Paul’s day and our culture today. Are there lessons from Paul’s second journey that we can glean? Here are several points that we will consider during the series of lessons.
- How important are mentors in understanding the doctrines of the faith? How does it aid and benefit in living the faith out each day?
- How does God lead and direct the life of the Christian? Do you look for signs of God’s leading? How do you know God is the one directing you?
- How does persecution affect the church? Is it possible that some of the persecution comes from demons? Can demons be active today? What are their purposes? How do we see their effects?
- What is the role of faith in the workplace? How does faith affect what we do at work?
